Call Volume and Trends

The Elmwood Fire Department handles an average of 200 calls annually. However, in recent years (2022, 2023 and 2024), call volumes have risen by 20 to 30 additional responses per year. Incidents include:

Fire Suppression

Residential, commercial, and agricultural fires, including grain bin fires, field fires, and vehicle fires.

Rescue Operations

Extrications from car accidents, grain bin entrapments, and water rescues in nearby natural areas.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS)

Providing life-saving medical first response in collaboration with area ambulance services.

Hazmat Incidents

Handling spills and hazardous material threats, particularly along railways and transport routes.

Staffing and Volunteer Commitment

The department is powered by 25 dedicated volunteers, each undergoing regular training to ensure they are equipped to meet the increasing demands of service. These volunteers donate countless hours to community safety, demonstrating a remarkable commitment to their neighbors and the mission of public protection. The department collaborates closely with neighboring departments, including Elba-Salem, Brimfield, Farmington, and Logan-Trivoli Fire Departments. As part of the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS), Elmwood can deploy and receive assistance during large-scale emergencies, reinforcing its capacity to respond effectively to the most challenging incidents.
