Our Response Area

The Elmwood Fire Department is a dedicated, volunteer-based fire and emergency service organization, proudly serving the City of Elmwood, Elmwood Township in Peoria County, and a portion of rural Knox County, Illinois. As an integral part of the community’s safety infrastructure, the department’s highly trained volunteers respond to an increasing volume of emergency calls each year, addressing fire suppression, rescue operations, medical emergencies, and community risk reduction initiatives.

Geography and Service Area

The district encompasses a unique mix of urban, suburban, and rural areas. Its coverage includes:

City of Elmwood: A historically rich, small city known for its community-centered values, attractive residential neighborhoods, and economic vibrancy.

Elmwood Township: Spanning rural landscapes, farmland, and wooded areas that demand tailored emergency strategies.

Knox County Sector: A portion of the service area crosses into Knox County, adding rural expanses to the department’s responsibilities.

Key Transportation Routes: Major roadways and rural highways, such as Illinois Route 78, increase the potential for vehicle accidents.

BNSF Railway Line: The main railway, carrying freight through the district, introduces unique risks associated with hazardous materials and train derailments.

This diverse geography brings a variety of challenges, from managing fire risks in rural farmland to urban incident responses in Elmwood itself.

Population and Demographics

The district serves an estimated population of approximately 2,600 people, spread across about 1,200 to 1,400 structures. The community is a mix of multi-generational families, young professionals, and retirees, with many working in agriculture, small businesses, or commuting to urban centers like Peoria. Remote work trends are driving increased residential activity throughout the day, impacting emergency response needs.
