History

The Elmwood Fire Dept began June 18, 1869 as the Neptune Fire Co. Engine No. 1 with 34 men.  There were 8 public cisterns to provide water to put out fires.  A constitution with bylaws was written and put into practice.  The company purchased engines and hoses.

A new building was dedicated November 27, 1889 at 201 W Main St and at a cost of $2,488.40.  On July 10, 1896, the fire company was renamed Neptune Fire Hose Co. No. 1.  Two teams were formed called Ha Ha and Dean.  A system of whistle blasts to notify people of location of fires was devised: one blast for east; 2 blasts for south; 3 blasts for north; and 4 blasts for west.  This system is no longer used today.

The first fire truck was purchased February 3, 1916.  Prior equipment was horse-powered.  The bell for the fire company is today located in front of the Morrison and Mary Wiley Library.  In 1917, the teams of Ha Ha and Dean were consolidated.  In December 1929, the name was changed to Elmwood Fire Department.

For many years, the activities of the Fire Department were paid by local subscriptions, fairs, dances, and other fundraisers.  In 1954, a special annual fire tax was levied.

In January 1973, property was purchased on North Magnolia St and West Evergreen St and dedicated in 1975.  The Fire Department is all volunteer.  In 1993, 911 services went into effect.  Rural Fire Protection has since been added.
