Burning & Fire Pit Regulations

The City of Elmwood, Illinois, has specific regulations regarding the use of fire pits and open burning to ensure community safety. According to the Elmwood Fire Department, a permanently installed fire pit requires an appropriate permit. It must be shown on the lot survey and conform to location requirements, such as being placed at least 10 feet away from any structure and having at least 10 feet of clearance from overhead branches. Portable fire pits are considered personal property and do not require a permit; however, homemade portable fire pits are not permitted. Additionally, all fire pits must use a mesh spark screen, and only dry seasoned hardwood or charcoal is allowed as fuel. Burning of plastic, painted or treated wood, rubber, leaves, grass, pallets, or household trash is strictly prohibited. An adult must always be present during the use of a fire pit, and a steady supply of water or an appropriately rated fire extinguisher must be nearby. Fire pits may not be used in winds over 15 miles per hour.
